Even though Alliance Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of El Monte, CA would often recommend living in a care facility as you get older, many healthy seniors want to keep their independence and prefer to live alone. However, what happens if living alone proves to be too much of a solitary lifestyle? Many seniors have families and friends, however their loved ones might not be able to spend too much time with them. The following are a few suggestions that can help you not be so lonely, even if you do live alone:

~ Contact your city services and find out if the offer programs for seniors

~ Religious or volunteer groups in your community will often offer activities for seniors, even if you are not of the same religion.

~ If you feel you require live-in assistance, you can contact your social services agency where they can provide, pre-screened qualified assistants.

~ The internet can help you connect with old friends or you can join a discussion forum. It is no substitute for human contact, but it can keep you informed and in contact with the world.

~ Pets can be great companions, they can help you feel less lonely and provide you with unconditional love and attention.

These are just a few ways to connect with other seniors and keep you from feeling lonely and alone. Remember that there are other seniors out there looking for companionship, do not feel embarrassed or intimidated to try out a few new activities.

Many times when a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease the most difficult decision is how to care for the person in the most humanly and effective way possible. Relatives are more likely to be willing to care for their loved one at home and hire a few nurses to take care of them. However, they do not see that doing so can be the most hurtful way to care for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Not only do patients become senile, in more advanced cases, basic activities like using the bathroom or getting dressed are impossible. This can be quite stressful and physically and mentally draining to the caregiver. Caregivers who are relatives of a patient usually put their own health on the backburner just to focus on trying to provide the best care they can manage to give their loved one. This can seem more “humane” than putting your loved one in a long-term nursing home; however, it is actually hurting them in more ways than one. An Alzheimer’s patient needs a group of people tending and caring for them, especially those suffering from severe cases. At a long-term nursing facility like Alliance Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Alzheimer patients will have access to doctors, physicians, nurses, maids, cooks, housekeepers, maintenance staff and other assistance 24 hours a day. Also, the grounds are secured and the environment is safe, therefore patients who have a tendency to walk around or wander off will not become lost or put themselves in danger. The nursing facility also helps patients socialize and trained professionals make sure they are safe and secured at all times. Best of all, since relatives are not stressed about taking care of their loved one, they get to enjoy the time they spend with them. Putting your loved one in a long-term nursing facility can be the best thing you do for them and Alliance Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is committed to give top of the line service for all of our patients. For more information call us at (626) 444-2535.

Geriatric rehabilitation is not just one type of rehabilitation, but different types of therapy put together to rehabilitate patients with conditions such as stroke, hip and knee replacements, cardiovascular problems, osteoporosis, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease. The three main types of therapies used with geriatric rehabilitation are speech-language pathology, physical, and occupational therapies. Each therapy focuses on important aspects of rehabilitation and is needed to successfully rehabilitate a patient. Speech-language pathology deals with improving a person’s ability to communicate and swallow if recovering from a swallowing disorder. Physical therapy deals with mobility and its main goal is to enhance mobility, improve strength, endurance, balance and posture in patients. Occupational therapy focuses on day to day tasks such as getting dressed, using the bathroom, bathing, cooking and other recreational activities. All together these three therapies work alongside each other to rehabilitate patients to become self fulfilling individuals. For more information about geriatric rehabilitation please call Alliance Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at (626) 448-4248.

There are several therapies that can assist in making recovery efficacious. However, knowing when to use each therapy as well as recovery itself can be unpredictable and at times complicated. Some of these therapies are: restorative, cell-based, electromagnetic, repetitive practice therapies. Restorative therapy involves the use of small molecules like neurotransmitters and immunologic agents that help improve function. Cell-based therapy stimulates endogenous repair of cells as well as prevent late brain injury. As for electromagnetic therapy, it stimulates the areas of the brain that are hypoactive along with constraining overactive regions after a stroke. Repetitive practice therapies are always good to use in conjunction with other therapies for enhanced results. The proper use of these therapies together with accurate diagnosis can help recovery become easier and more likely to positively affect patients.
